Course Description

Program Description Our program provides comprehensive instruction in mechanical engineering design, research and development. Job-specific skills In this program, you'll work in Sheridan's sophisticated laboratory environment with the most current tools and techniques, completing projects that simulate the workplace responsibilities of mechanical engineering technicians. You'll acquire a broad base of fundamental knowledge, along with job-specific skills that employers are looking for. Hands-on experience You'll study mechanical engineering systems under the CDIO paradigm (conceive, design, implement and operate), using advanced equipment and technologies, including: Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) Fluid power technology Energy systems Fluid mechanics Kinetics and dynamics of machines Computer-assisted Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) Co-op opportunities Mechanical Engineering Technology students can apply for a paid co-op work term, supplementing their education with paid work experience. Enrolment is limited through an additional co-op selection process. A solid foundation You'll also get a solid academic foundation in basic math and science, as well as classroom instruction in advanced subjects such as calculus, kinetics, machine dynamics, energy systems and industrial practice. Optional third year You can graduate with a diploma after four semesters as a mechanical engineering technician, or stay on for a third year to acquire an advanced diploma and graduate as a mechanical engineering technologist. Additional certification When you graduate from this program, you’ll have completed all the academic requirements for professional certification with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT). Additional requirements for certification exist and are established by OACETT. You’ll also have the opportunity to transfer to a number of universities to obtain a bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology. Outstanding career preparation Graduates find employment in all areas of industry and manufacturing, including: Food manufacturing Computer-assisted manufacturing Mechanical engineering design HVAC Engineering consulting Oil and mining Metallurgical Aeronautics Nuclear Maintenance Plant operations Production Process control Product development and testing Quality control Technical sales Demand is particularly high in the aeronautical, automotive and processing sectors. Many of our graduates have progressed into management positions, and some have successfully started their own companies.
